Early Wake Up Call

I’m writing this at lunch time, but I’ve been awake for so long (since 4am!), it feels like 5 in the evening.


Why have I been upright for such an ungodly amount of time?  For a good reason ;).  I’ve mentioned I am a public radio announcer and that my co-worker and his wife are expecting their first baby (remember, I made an all natural “bootie” cake for the work shower?)…well, last night, he called to let me know they were on their way to the hospital.  It was GO time which meant I’m working his early morning shift while he takes time to be a daddy.

I get so excited when friends have babies so I didn’t even mind only get a few hours of sleep and hitting the airwaves before most people were awake.  It was worth it.

Since I was up at 4 and at work at 5, breakfast was a little wonky.  In fact, most of it didn’t get photographed — just one little hunk of banana bread I was able to nab before work got really crazy.

Since you’re all brillant, I know I’m not asking anything mentally taxing when I say just imagine some red grapes, a banana and some egg and sausage cassarole on the side.  That was breakfast.  It was a lot more than I usually eat, but today is going to be a long day, I need the go power!  Oh, and there was coffee.  That goes without saying.  There was enough caffeine flowing through my body to power the next NASA shuttle launch.  It was probably unhealthy.  Probably.  Whatever, it was unavoidable.  I am not a morning person.  I don’t even know if I’m an early afternoon person.

I slugged through a full day, leaving at 8am to head to class where I found it next to impossible to get my sleep-adled brain to flip the switch and think in Spanish, then headed back to work to wrap up some loose ends.  Needless to say, when I got home, I was hungry.

It was the kind of hungry where you can’t decide — am I hungry hungry or am I just meh-hungry?  I usually take the indecision as a sign that I’m just meh-hungry, so I should try something light first, probably drink a lot of water  and then listen to what my body is telling me.

While drinking said water (to counteract the neggy effects of my two or, um, six cups of coffee), I fixed this beauty.

It’s just a spinach salad, but it looked so summery and delish, I was so proud.  I was beaming when I sat down to eat it.  Fatigue-induced delirium?  Maybe.

On a big bed of spinach (love me some vitamin K!), I added about a cup of chopped strawberries (hola, vitamin C!), about a tablespoon of chopped walnuts, reduced fat feta cheese (everything’s bettah with feta!), a sprinkle of craisins and for some protein, one hardboiled egg white for protein.

This baby is too class for anything other than the little black dress of the salad dressing closet:  EVOO and balsamic vinegar.


I’m glad I tried something small and nutrient packed, I’m full up now.  That’s not to say I won’t be HUNGRY later, but I’ll wait until my tummy tells me so instead of letting the clock brainwash me into thinking I have to eat NOW!

There’s a nap in the works soon, then a loooooong walk with the monsters.  First, I’m going to finish watching this episode of the Barefoot Contessa.  The perk of working so early is I can catch the awesome Food Network and FitTv shows in the afternoon.  I am developing a culinary crush on my girl Ina.

She’s making a “for the boss” dinner. Ina, I will hire you.  Call me. 😉
